In shaping and molding the behavior of a child parents play an important role. Parents are responsible for giving a child better environment, teaching appropriate language, and building positive approach in a child. Child learn simply by observing the environment around him.
In psychology we usually talk about parenting styles and it's impact on child's personality and behavior. Here are four types of parenting styles including authoritative, authoritarian, permissive and neglected. As their name shows the nature of parenting styles.
Authoritative parents set rules, and they use consequences, but they also take their children’s opinions into account. They understand their children’s feelings while also making it clear that the adults are ultimately in charge. They have positive discipline strategies to reinforce good behavior by praising their child. Children with parents who demonstrate this style tend to be self-disciplined and well motivated.
Authoritarian parenting
In this style parents impose authority over child without any exception. Children have to follow the rules and fulfill the task. Parents used to punish and do not focus on maintaining the discipline. Child did not learn about problem solving attitude in this kind of environment. So rather than teach a child how to make better choices, they’re invested in making kids feel sorry for their mistakes. Children of authoritarian parents ultimately develop self esteem issues
Permissive Parenting
In this style, parents are seen as very lenient to their child, they forgive them and give privileges to their child if he or she asks for. They used to motivate and encourage their children to talk with them about their issues, but they typically don’t put much effort into discouraging poor choices or bad behavior.
Uninvolved or neglected Parenting
Uninvolved parents tend to have little knowledge of what their children are doing. There tend to be few rules. Children may not receive much guidance, nurturing, and parental attention. Uninvolved parents expect children to raise themselves. They don’t devote much time or energy to meeting children’s basic needs. These parents are.may be those in which both mother and father are working and they give no time to their child. Children with uninvolved parents are likely to struggle with self-esteem issues. They tend to perform poorly in school. They also exhibit frequent behavior problems and rank low in happiness.
Parenting is no doubt very difficult task and it takes alot of time and energy. This post is especially for the parents and also creating awareness among them so that they look out their attitude and their parenting style.
